Welcome to Kelston Deaf Education Centre’s Provision at Kelston Boys’ High School. The KDEC Provision here is part of the only single sex secondary school for boys in West Auckland. KDEC enrolled students from Year 9 to Year 13+ attend this provision. KDEC staff the provision with Teachers of the Deaf, Educational Associates and an Educational Interpreter. In addition to the full-time staff based in the provision, staff from KDEC’s Specialist Services team visit regularly to support specific students. These specialists include the school psychologist, occupational therapist, speech language therapist and the physiotherapist. Students wellbeing needs are also met by regular visits from the KDEC School Counsellor. The Deaf Provision is a welcoming, modern and access-able learning environment
The KDEC students attend either mainstream classes with KDEC staff or are taught in the Provision itself by a specialist teacher of the Deaf. Each student develops an individualised programme, with their teachers and parents that best meet their need to complete secondary education. Students are able to enter for a number of qualifications such as NCEA (L1, L2 and L3 plus UE) and/or qualifications such as the South Pacific Education Courses (SPEC) where KDEC is a Centre of Excellence. A full range of co-curricular activities, camps and sports teams are also available.
All pathways allow each student to cover the five key competencies as set out in the NZ Curriculum and provide a positive foundation for success in life beyond school.
If you would like to arrange a visit with a view to enrolling please contact the Deputy Head of School, Margaret Carr: (09) 827 4859 firstname.lastname@example.org
